The island of Gran Roque is a short thirty minute flight from Caracas. This is the main island of the Los Roques archipelago which is made up approximately 350 islands, and was declared a national park by the Venezuelan government. Gran Roque has about 1500 permanent inhabitants, but sees many more visitors each year who come to the enjoy the laid back lifestyle, wind and kite surfing, snorkeling, and world class flats fishing. The town itself is a maze of sand pathways, lined by small restaurants, shops, and posadas. The only car on the island is a small garbage truck. Fishing guests stay at the beautiful Posada Acuarela. With an open air feel, rooftop terrace and exceptional meals, Acuarela is an extremely comfortable and well-run establishment.

Chris Yrazabal and his team at Sight Cast have run a great fishing operation on Los Roques for the past 13 years. They do an exceptional job at organizing travel to and from the island, providing quality guides, and making sure that all guests have a great experience. After breakfast each morning, anglers organize their tackle and make a very short walk to the beach where boats and guides are waiting. Boats are comfortable and roomy, and all have Bimini tops which provide a welcome break from the strong sun. The boats, however, are mostly for transportation as almost all angling is done while wading.

There are numerous types of fishing environments on Los Roques to experience, including pancake flats, sandy beaches, protected back-bays, and the open ocean. Most anglers spend their days stalking Bonefish, and for good reason. These fish thrive on Los Roques, and most are on the healthy side of 5 pounds, with fish up to 10 pounds a real possibility. Tarpon are also present, as are numerous kinds of Jacks, Barracuda and Permit during certain months.

I've been asked many times about my favorite Bonefishing destination, and it is always a difficult question to answer. Christmas Island is unparalleled and the Bahamas superb. But I always tell people there is no place I have ever been like Los Roques. Few destinations with this quality of fishing also appeal to non-anglers. And few fishing lodges have the wonderful ambiance and cuisine of Posada Acuarela. All in all, Los Roques is a top-notch destination which all saltwater anglers should experience.
